Professor Jiri Beran, is the Head of the Department for Tropical, Travel Medicine and Vaccination, at the Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education in Prague, since 2004. He is also the Director of the Vaccination and Travel Medicine Centre in Hradec Kralove.
He graduated in 1985 and he started his academic career in 1990 at Purkyne Military Medical Academy, where he was serving also as the Vice-rector for research and foreign affairs. He created and headed the Vaccination and Travel Medicine Centre at the Department of Infectious Diseases of the University Hospital in Hradec Kralove until 2008. He was appointed as Professor of Medicine in 2002.
He has conducted systematic research in the field of vaccine development and the long-term follow up of immunized subjects (15 and 18 years) for lyme vaccine, TBE vaccine, typhoid fever vaccines, meningococcal, streptococcal, RSV, influenza, hepatitis A and B vaccines etc. He is also a recognized expert in the area of post-infection and post-vaccination immunity.
His original papers deal mainly with vaccines development and vaccines clinical trials and they were mostly published in highly regarded journals (Vaccine Journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases, etc.). He also issued some papers and books on the topic of vaccination, tropical and travel medicine in the Czech language. He is the author of the chapter “Routine Travel Vaccines” in the 3rd and the 4th editions of Travel Medicine published by Elsevier. This is the bestselling book in the area of travel medicine in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe.
He is a founding member of TropNet – a cooperation of clinics working in the field of tropical medicine and he contributes on behalf of the Czech Republic to Shoreland - Travax. He is a member of many Czech and international medical societies.
His current Science Citation Index is more than 3200, h-index is 30 and i10 index is 61.
